The time of resolutions, renewals, and change is usually January 1st; it’s understandable; a New Year means it’s time to try again, time to start over and improve on the person you were last year. Still, New Year’s Day is not the only time of the year to begin anew. I believe people overlook a perfect time of the year to start something new, the summertime. June, July, and August are three ideal months of the year to implement change in your life. It is the perfect block of time to try that new hobby or have that adventure of your dreams. Three months is a great time to focus on fitness (although it’s the hottest time of the year, maybe join a gym). It is a 90-day test run to see if your new interest sticks. The summer season is the perfect opportunity to explore a life change and discover a new love or calling. We are already in July, nearly halfway to the end of summer, but it is never too late to embrace a new goal or find a new you.
I’m sure many people last summer embraced a new hobby; it is impressive what you try to learn when you cannot leave your house all summer. When the restrictions finally let up a bit in my area during the summer of 2020, I learned to dive and got my dive certificate (right before we went back into lockdown). It was an experience that I have always wanted to try. Although I must admit I was fearful, I let some friends talk me into it. This summer’s goals, however, are not quite as adventurous. I have decided to spend more time writing and working on personal finance; I am just staying home and saving money. I have chosen to dedicate more time to skill improvement and learning; not exactly a hot girl summer but self-improvement is always a worthy goal.
What have you discovered this summer? Will you take the next month and a half to uncover something that you truly would enjoy? When was the last time you tried something completely new? I fear the older we grow, the less venturesome we become. Time is usually the obstruction to our goals, but I realize that carving out a few moments of your day to dedicate to something that genuinely inspires you can turn into the best few moments of your 24 hours. Sometimes when you just set your timer for 30 minutes and zone out into a sketch pad, a new instrument, or maybe that notebook that you have meant to write a few lines in for the last year can bring immense joy to your life. I’ve realized that time will go on no matter what you choose to do or not do; time will pass just the same. As the saying goes, “time waits for no man.” So, what are you waiting for next year’s resolution, or are you ready to start something new this summer?
