I enjoy writing. It was my preferred method of communicating as a child (I was a very shy and introverted kid). It was my favorite part of college. It’s one of my hobbies that brings me the most peace. What I have discovered about writing in today’s highly technical environment is that it can be made easier with artificial intelligence. I am all for technology but unlike some, I don’t think A.I. will be able to replace people in the workplace. Not all jobs at least. I appreciate that there can be a more efficient way of producing materials and doing research. However, when it comes to the creatives, I think we will always need people. I know A.I. can create beautiful works of art and write entire novels with just a few key words of instruction, but have you ever read something written by artificial intelligence? It normally reads as though it was written by a computer.
The greatest thing about human creativity is that it comes from within the individual. Their personalities, life experiences and soul can come across in a beautiful work of art or exquisitely posed poem. I do not believe that A.I. will ever replace that. Yes, technology can write using correct grammar and punctuation, but it can also change the tone and erase the author’s voice. Simple grammar checks will always ask to change the way something is written, which may be the grammatically correct way to write the sentence, but it no longer sounds like the author, or conveys what the author is trying to convey and more importantly how the author is trying to relay the message to the audience. Why would I bother writing if my words only end up sounding very proper in tone or like everyone else? The point of creativity is to be diverse; no two pieces of art are exactly the same and even if the book tells the same story, the perspective of the writer can show it in a different light. No one wants to read a story or opinion, written in the same manner every time, simply to cover talking points. Who wants to look at only paintings perfectly executed because a machine can replicate color theory?
People bring life to art in every form, and emotion creates the best forms of art. A.I. cannot feel, it will never know the joy of love, and longing, the pain of loss, or the roller coaster that is living. It will evolve as time and technology grow but it will never be human. I know there are countless companies working on making artificial intelligence more lifelike but as every Hollywood thriller featuring A.I. shows, artificial intelligence with free will may not be the achievement that humans want. Not that I believe in science fiction, but science fact is that someone is trying to make it a reality. Meanwhile, I want to keep reading stories from people who have lived lives filled with experiences and, different perspectives. I want details of emotions felt through joys, trials, and tribulations. I hope to always have a person on the other side of the idea displayed in the creative works; not art and literature only created by intelligent computers.
